Messina
"Messina is the third largest city on the island of Sicily, Italy and the capital of the province of Messina. It has a population of 250,000 inhabitants in the city proper and about 500,000 in the metropolitan area.
It is located near the North-East corner of Sicily, at the Strait of Messina, just opposite Villa San Giovanni which is itself north of Reggio Calabria across the straits, on the mainland.
The main economical resource of the city is the port, both commercial and military, with several shipyards. Agriculture include cultivations of lemons, oranges, mandarin oranges and other fruit, vegetables and wine.
The city has been a Catholic Archdiocese seat since 1548 and is home to a locally important International Fair." (Wikipedia)

John and Maureen Gilmore have been ministering in Messina at Chiesa Biblica Cristiana. Aurora Mission also has a church in nearby Rometta.
As is the case with all Italian cities, Catholicism is the primary religion. In the words of John Julius Norwich: "Norman Sicily stood forth in Europe --and indeed in the whole bigoted medieval world-- as an example of tolerance and enlightenment, a lesson in the respect that every man should feel for those whose blood and beliefs happen to differ from his own."
According to a popular tourism website, "Messina, third biggest city in Sicily (after Palermo and Catania), seat of an archbishop and a university, is the place where rail and car travelers first set foot on Sicilian soil, greeted by the great statue of the Virgin Mary by the harbor with the inscription on its plinth: "Vos et ipsam civitatem benedicimus" (We bless you and your city), a quotation from a letter which according to the legend Mary gave to the Christians of the city."

Mythology, mysticism, many cults, and atheism are also widely practiced.
The beautiful Mediterranean town of Sicily is filled with cultural and religious diversity. It is the goal of Aurora Mission to continue to be an Evangelical Christian influence there. Please pray that the truth of God's Word would reach the people of Messina.
