"Melfi is a town and comune in the Vulture area of the province of Potenza, in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata.

On a hill at the foot of Mount Vulture, Melfi is the most important town in Basilicata's Vulture, both as a tourist resort and economic center.

Basilicata is a region in the south of Italy, bordering on Campania to the west, Puglia (Apulia) to the east, Calabria to the south, it has one short coastline on the Tyrrhenian Sea and another of the Gulf of Taranto in the Ionian Sea to the Norman Castle in Melfi south-east. The region covers 9,992 km² and in 2001 had a population of about 600,000 inhabitants. The regional capital is Potenza. The region is divided into two provinces: Potenza and Matera." (Wikipedia)

The largest structure in Melfi is the Castello di Melfi; today it houses the Melfi National Museum. Melfi is a market town located in an extensive olive-growing area. It has a fine 12th century cathedral, modernized in 1851; adjoining it is the former Archbishop's Palace.
